There are a few checks that you should do on your vehicle every few weeks. This is to spot any problems that could cause a breakdown. The most important things you should check is tyres, electrics, oil, water, lights and fuel.  

Tyres

Having damaged tyres is one of the most common breakdown causes. So it is important to check your tyre pressure to make sure they are properly inflated. At the same time also check the condition of the tyres. If they are not inflated correctly this could be a big risk to yourself and passengers in the car. Electrics

Oil

Checking the oil in your vehicle is recommended every 1,000 miles. As some vehicles can go through as much as a litre of oil every 1,000 miles. It’s best to get in a good habit of checking the oil weekly to ensure that there is always enough oil. Don’t wait until there is a warning light, as there may already be engine damage at this point.  

Water

Checking your coolant level every few weeks is important to prevent an overheating related breakdown. It’s most important to check this during the hotter months. If you notice that the levels tend to always be low then get it checked for leaks. It is also good to top up windscreen washer fluid, to ensure that you always have good visibility.  

Lights

It’s good practice to check that all bulbs are working, check for blown bulbs and cracks in the lenses. While checking them it is good to give all exterior lights a clean.  

Fuel

Having fuel in the engine is key to ensure your vehicle is running. When driving in unfamiliar areas it is important to have a sufficient amount of fuel. Do not wait until the fuel light comes on in an unknown area, as you may not know the next opportunity to get fuel. If you are running low on fuel and see a petrol station, then do stop and top up your fuel.
