How To Avoid a Breakdown This Winter!
Breakdowns are much more common in the winter months. Road conditions are much more dangerous when there is snow and ice. Here is how to prepare as best as you can!Tyres
- In winter it’s recommended to have at least 3mm of tread
- Only use snow chains if there is enough snow, this is to prevent any damage to the roads
- Winter tyres or all-season tyres are great to use. They are made from special rubber to grip to the road better during cold and wet months
Visibility
- Make sure that lights, number plates and windscreens are clean to improve visibility. This will also help to avoid any fines.
- Use your headlights when visibility is reduced
- Make sure that all lights are working
Antifreeze
Antifreeze is a few pounds, and can prevent a frozen and cracked engine that could be hundreds to repair. The mix tends to be 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water, however this can vary depending on vehicle manufacture. Antifreeze protects the engine from temperatures down to -34c. Some antifreeze needs changing every two years. But check your service schedule to find out what it is for your vehicle.Vision
- Clear your windscreen inside and out
- Clear any snow from the roof as it can fall onto your windscreen
- Replace any damaged or worn wiper blades
- Use an additive in your screen-wash to reduce the chance of it freezing
Batteries and Electrics
Car batteries tend to last around 5 years, but there is more strain on them in the winter months.- If your car doesn’t start, wait 30 seconds before trying again
- Turn off all electrical loads before starting the car. These can be things such as lights, heaters and wipers
- If you don’t use the car often then turn it on regularly to ensure the battery is charged
Other Tips
- Try and get up 10/15 minutes earlier to allow time to de-ice the car
- Check at least a quarter of a tank of fuel in case of a unexpected delay
- Ensure all windows are clear before setting off
- DON’T take your feet off the pedals
- DON’T ignore faults, dashboard signs shouldn’t be ignored
- DON’T tailgate. During wet and cold conditions stopping distance can be 10 times longer. So it’s important to leave a good amount of stopping distance
