20% of serious road accidents at night within the UK is due to drivers falling asleep at the wheel. This can happen at any time of day, but happens moreduring the night. Before any drive it is important to be well rested to reduce any risks. Another leading factor to accidents is due to a blown bulb. This is makes it hard for approaching drivers to gauge the width of your car. In low speeds you risk a ‘scrape’ but high speeds it can result in much more serious accidents.Darkest UK Areas
In the UK the darkest regions for driving is East Anglia, South West and the East Midlands. The majority of lights in these areas are either switched off or dimmed. This it means that these areas are the most dangerous to drive during the night. The brightest areas are Scotland and London. Here no lights are switched off and only a small amount are dimmed. These areas are considered much more safer.Tips for safer night driving:
- Dip your lights when approaching other road users
- Clean windows to avoid glare
- Increase visibility, by turning headlights for an hour after sunrise
- Give more space
- Allow longer for your journey
- Watch out for pedestrians
- Do not stare at oncoming lights
- Taking regular breaks
