Brake fluid is ‘hydraulic fluid’, which means it’s moved or powered by fluids. It moves components in your braking system, and it works under high pressures and temperatures. So it is very important to maintain your brake fluid, as the more it ages the more ineffective it gets.
Why do you need to change your brake fluid?
DOT 3,4 and 5.1 are hygroscopic when means they absorb water from the humidity around them. Brake fluid is in-compressible under pressure as it has a high boiling point. The heat from the brakes alone isn’t enough to cause it to boil, whereas water has a much lower boiling point. It’s recommended for most vehicles to have the brake fluid changes every 2 years. Or to check your manufacturers brake fluid replacement requirements.
How often should I change it?
We recommend that brake fluid should be changed every 2 years or 24,000 miles. But, there will be a guideline in your manufactures guide. However, if you do suspect a leak of brake fluid then it is important to get it checked by a mechanic. As lack of fluids can cause major issues.
Express Fit Autocentres offer a Free Brake Fluid check, this is where we will test the boiling point of your brake fluid. This will give us an indication of how effective your brake fluid is. If you would like to book it in then please ring your local branch onĀ 01584 817 695
